Refurbished Macbook Pros. Just Like What They Offer For All New Macbook Pros.
So Why Buy Elsewhere When You Can Buy It At Apple.
New Macbook Pros or Old Macbooks Pros Which is the Better Buy?
The New Apple Macbook Pros are out and they've been the talk of the town. With their new "unibody" aluminum casing and LED backlit screen, the New Macbook Pros are indeed sexy as hell. Unfortunately, they're also a tad expensive and out many people's price range. Are the New Macbooks Pro really worth it or should you wait or shop around?
Let's take a look at the Macbook Pros. A standard brand new 15-inch Macbook Pro with the 2.4GHz Intel Processor will run you $1999.00. What I'd like to propose, if you're looking into purchasing a Macbook Pro, is to go the refurbished macbook pro route. That is, consider buying a refurbished Macbook Pro from the previous generation of Macbooks. Refurbished you say? Are you out of your mind? Well hear me out as I make several arguments for it.
The first thing that stands out for me is the price difference. Buying this new 15-inch base model Macbook Pro will cost you $1999. If you buy a refurbished unit, it'll cost you $1099. That's a difference of $900! That's huge, considering my next point. You're not getting that much more by going new. The hardware specifications for the new Macbook Pros are similar to the old Macbook Pros. The two run the same Intel Core 2 Duos. Both have the same amount of memory and hard disk space, and the optical drives are identical with the current 8x SuperDrives. The new Macbooks aren't going to run that much faster than the old generation Macbooks.
Let's take a look at the hardware differences. The new "unibody" chassis is indeed nice, providing for a more consistent look while at the same time offering better structural integrity. However, the old Macbook Pros are also made out of aluminum and are just as durable and aesthetically pleasing as the new. The new Macbooks Pros have an LED display which seem to provide better color contrast, though there's a big enough group of people who prefer the old matte Macbook screen as opposed to the glossy version. The video card and chipsets are different, with Apple choosing to go with Nvidia. Now in the New Macbook Pros you'll find two chips that control graphics. A shared chip kicks in to extend battery life and a discrete chip can be switched on to assist in graphic intensive applications. Good and bad to this, but my case would be that you can change your settings in the power management options. Thus no biggie to me. I'll also throw in that the new Macbook Pro do not include an Apple Remote.
Now moving on to the whole refurbished part. I know there's a stigma that's associated to refurbished products. However I believe it's really a misconception, especially in the case for Apple. Refurbished Macbook Pro's are fully functional units that have been inspected, tested, cleaned and repackaged for sale. They've been restored to their original factory settings. These notebooks function just like the new ones. In fact, they carry the same warranty as the new ones. That's right, both new and old have the same 1 year warranties. If you're not satisfied with that, then go ahead and purchase extended AppleCare with the massive amount of savings you're already getting by going refurbished. Think about it some more. It's really a great deal.
So shop smart and consider these points as you're shopping around for a new Macbook Pro. You can save $900 and pocket that savings for other purchases. For many, use that money to buy a notebook carrying case. Buy some productivity applications, such as Microsoft Office, for your Macbook Pro. Or you could buy a new external display to complement your Macbook. You can do all of this and more and still have money in the pocket leftover.
